Chepstow Horse Racing Tips 27th May |

Pocket A Pick Or Two

Chepstow racing tips from the legendary, Donald Keys. That's me. Pleased to meet you, yadda yadda, no time to chat so let's crack on.
2.20 Could possibly pick 3 or 4 from this one but the Donald Keys hunch is saying Riflessione is worth a punt @ 4.6 currently on Betfair - it loves ground. It'll probably enjoy this ground in particular. We shall see.
2.50 Another tough one. Just the way I like it. I hate them all but the one I hate least is probably Night Prospector @ 5/1 with Bet365. Needs to find something a little extra to win but I can see this beast claiming a place. Casla Beag could also just about nick a place says the Donald Keys gunch (gut and hunch combo) @ 15.00's with bet365.
3.20 As the Racing Post say, this looks an absolute minefield. Oh, I love the thrill of running through a minefield. Titfer has a spiffy draw and aint the worst animal I've ever seen so let's try the bugger e/w - it's @ 12.00's betfair or 9.00 @ good old bet365 A bit of a lottery this though. Mind your feet.
3.50 If you know me then you know I like to take the odd gamble when everyone else is looking elsewhere (at far more likely animals). The ground is really the major gamble here for Red Current but I think it can squeeze into a place. It's currently @ 25.00 on betfair or 17.00 @ bet365. Davenport looks a tough one to beat here, and the odds reflect that. Not one for me though.
4.20 Ermine Grey won for me last time out @ nice odds so I'm not overly worried about trying it again. It's a decent animal and a 6lb rise we can just about deal with. Enough ticks for me again anyway. Currently 6.8 @ betfair and 5.00 bet365.
4.50 Tricky. Tough. And treacherous. I'm salivating. Another horse that won for me recently at nice odds is Trinculo and I do still like this lovely animal and it likes me. It's certainly a decent e/w shout and I see it's currently 14.00's @ betfair or a rather crappy 9.00's @ bet365 (how dare you!). It enjoys Chepstow which is good enough for me.

Odds available with Betfair at time of writing....
2.30 Madam Harriet @ 7.4 - Showed a good attitude when winning a Chepstow slog early last month (runner-up gone in since); couple of respectable efforts subsequently, including on drying ground that wouldn´t have been ideal last time, and possibilities. 3.00 Lockstown @ 10.00 e/w - Point winner whose opening bumper fourth on similar ground hasn´t worked out; stiffer test could help now hurdling, though, and looks the main danger to Classic Chic. 3.30 Woodview @ 10.00 e/w - Has his own ideas about the game and followers will want to hold their breath at the start and over the first few fences (came down at the first last Monday); otherwise, is 15lb better off for half a length with Reckless Venture than over C&D last month. 4.00 Nolwenn @ 12.5 e/w - Heavy-ground Flat winner in France around 18 months ago who turned in a better effort on her second start for this yard back over hurdles last time; that was only a seller and a weak one but she´s got an each-way shout down to 95. 4.30 Nectar De Guye @ 19.00 e/w - Placed but no win in France and same story for Ferdy Murphy last season before a cheap sale; placed in four of seven points and it seems he finds winning a problem; modest form at 3m3f last term should not be good enough. 5.00 China House @ 3.6 - Half-brother to the yard´s Grand National winner Amberleigh House, who was quite happy on this sort of ground; another half-sibling, The Guarantor, won a couple of bumpers for Willie Mullins a few years ago. |

Odds available with Betfair at time of writing....
2.20 How's Business @ 5.4 - Moderate form over staying trips on the Flat but already looking a fair prospect at this game, accounting for a subsequent winner on debut and creditable efforts since, particularly at Market Rasen behind the useful Metaphoric; stiff ask strictly on the figures but extra yardage a potential positive and light weight will be handy should conditions turn nasty.
2.50 Armaddy @ 5.6 - A bit better for the blinkers, both over jumps and on Flat (winner), but left trailing by a stablemate of Haddaaf´s when odds-on over C&D last time and not a sure a repeat of that performance will be enough to go one better.
3.20 Little Aldor @ 3.15 - Front-runner who won at Chepstow in February and has kept his form; rising in the weights and tendency to jump right is off-putting but his claims in this field are as good as any.
3.50 Explosive Fox @ 7.2 - Last three starts, all front-running, the best form he´s show for about two years; they were on softer ground than is forecast today (heavy last two outings) but old form suggests he can do it on good going as well; considered
4.20 Tirailleur @ 7.8 - A regular in these low-grade events (no win since 2006) but handicapper finally given her a chance and wasn´t beaten that far on good ground at Stratford before getting stuck in the mud last time; possibilities.
4.50 Celebrity Call @ 11.00 e/w - Won only point and proved an out-and-out stayer over hurdles, seemingly suited by sound surfaces; probably needed it on chasing debut after a break but clear of the third when runner-up over C&D next time and winner has since been placed off his revised mark; chance.
Roddy The Vet @ 13.00 e/w - Form figures don´t look good this season but has been travelling well to a point only to find little under pressure in the blinkers, so going without the aids for a change perhaps no bad thing; jumps well despite falling here two runs back on desperate ground and on a decent mark, so not discounted.
5.20 Pearly Star @ 7.8 - In the middle of a tame run of form but shaped with a tad more promise in the cheekpieces at Exeter last time and is dangerously well treated should he rediscover his touch, being 5lb lower than when gaining the second of last season´s two Fontwell wins.

Odds available with Betfair at time of writing....
2.10 Sale Or Return @ 5.2 - 6,000gns yearling; May foal; stable off the mark with their juveniles this season and market should guide as to what is expected.
2.40 Al Alzy @ 6.4 - Largely progressive albeit at modest level as 2yo; below that form returning from six months off at around this trip on return, leaving slight question whether this stiffer test will suit; arguably has the best form, but bit to prove.
3.10 Turnkey @ 10.00 - Shaped almost as well as Damika at Doncaster last time and better off with that one for C&D win under this rider last July; stiffish 6f on easy ground ideal and no guarantee stable second string on jockey bookings; should go well now down to last winningmark.
Damika @ 8.00 - Really progressive over last two seasons and looked to have come back better than ever when closing fourth in competitive event on reappearance; that form working out well and leading contender with stiffer track here ideal.
3.40 At The Money @ 5.6 - Progressive stayer in 2006 but lightly raced on Flat since; fit from hurdling, good second behind improving sort here on reappearance when blinkered first time; that form been franked since, handles ground and obvious chance if just as good over this extra 4f.

I felt rather good about my picks last week and managed 3 wins and a 2nd place but to be honest.... things much, much tougher this week. We're needing a miracle of Steve MacAccaman proportions. Miracles happen though and I'm certainly due one. Don't let me down, dear lord.
Balls. I did these too:

Odds available with Betfair at time of writing....
2.05 Rose of Coma @ 5.6 - Likely sort on paper, has the best of the draw next to the stands rail and represents a stable which had quite a well-fancied 2yo debut winner in midweek; has to be high on the list. 2.40 The Osteopath @ 7.8 - Give in ground essential and has taken on new lease of life this term with headgear dispensed with; now 7lb higher than when readily defying penalty at Leicester and this may be his Waterloo. Distant Sun @ 15.50 e/w - Stable in hot form this week; gone close over 7f, though might not be just coincidence all four wins at sprint trips; valiant 5f AW effort last time but now 11lb higher than when last ran on turf. 3.15 Sforzando @ 22.00 - Not without promise when mid-div in 1m2f Nottingham soft-ground handicap on return to turf this month and respectable second off 1lb lower in this race last year; vulnerable to something less exposed or better treated. Sporting Gesture @ 20.00 e/w - All wins in long and honourable career have been on sound surface; 2lb higher than when all-the-way winner at York in September and has a decent record here (1252153) but usually needs his first run. 3.50 Ebraam @ 23.00 e/w - Won four times on Polytrack this winter, and has improved three stones since July on official ratings; still a bit to find in this company, however, and no guarantee he´ll be as good back on turf. 4.25 Cape Vale @ 6.4 - Big price when winning on debut here and 2yos from this yard that manage that feat often turn out to be decent; still learning the ropes when winning an Ayr nursery off 4lb lower in one more start, won´t mind the drop in trip and very interesting. Loose Caboose @ 50.00 e/w - Had plenty of racing and used to competing at a lower level than this on the AW; stays 6f with bells on and whether this easy 5f will work in her favour questionable. 5.00 Imperial Echo @ 10.00 e/w - Now 11lb lower than when beaten only 1l in the 7f handicap on this card last year and also ran a blinder when close fourth over this C&D in June; not been in great form for new stable on AW and found 5.5f too sharp back on grass last time but dangerouslywell treated. Steel Blue @ 13.50 e/w - Now 2lb lower than for C&D fast-ground success in August, so chance not to be sneered at, given he also ran well on softer later on and will appreciate return to turf after AW defeat 11 days ago. |

Saturday, 19 April 2008 08:31 |
Odds available with Betfair at time of writing....
1.55 La Vecchia Scuola @ 2.96 - Still a dodgy jumper; nevertheless, series of improved efforts at 2m2f+ over last couple of months, running a blinder in the face of a very stiff task in Aintree Grade 1 over 3m and then registering last-gasp victory dropped back to 2m for handicap here yesterday; big chance on the ratings if turned out again.
2.30 Endless Power @ 11.5 e/w - First four wins of his career were all here but proved a revelation with first ´away´ success when making all and thrashing opposition in decent Aintree novice handicap earlier this month; seemed to appreciate the good ground then, so though he has won in testing conditions, could probably do with rain staying away; ran well when third in handicap over C&D yesterday but had hard enough race and more needed anyway if turned out again.
3.00 Pearl King @ 5.6 - Ground is crucial as he has shown a marked preference for a decent surface, including when back from 11 months off and clearcut winner of competitive Aintree handicap recently; 16lb higher now but still looks one of the better-weighted contenders with somany of these out of the handicap and, with more probably to come, leading contender.
French Saulaie @ 19.5 e/w - Returned to hurdles with highly creditable third in County Hurdle at Cheltenham last time; reliable sort who will go in conditions and every reason to expect a good show.
3.40 Miko De Beauchene @ 9.4 - Two big handicap wins at around 3m4f this term, going up 9lb both times; Halcon Genelardais may be better off for very close call in Welsh National first occasion but this one has improved since and shapes as if he´s the more likely to appreciate 4m, in fact he will probably relish every yard (ran well with insufficient test over hurdles latest); fine chance.
Wild Cane Ridge @ 19.00 e/w -Testing ground suits and, even though 3lb out of handicap, on decent mark judged on best efforts from last term and this; also interesting for a thorough stamina test, so one to consider; big issue is whether his sometimes haphazard jumping holds up but this is first time as chaser that he´s had blinkers (worn over hurdles last three starts) to help.
Ossmoses @ 19.00 e/w - Off with a tendon strain for nearly a year, reappearing last month with satisfactory show (assuming needed race) at Newbury; 11lb out of handicap but go back to his form two years ago (over 3m4f and 4m1f, both on heavy) and he has a chance.

Odds available with Betfair at time of writing....
1.40 Moyenne Corniche @ 7.4 - Moyenne Cornich: Pleasing debut from off steady pace when closing fourth in 1m Nottingham maiden on debut; that only an ordinary affair but clearly expected to do much better this year (has 2,000 Guineas entry) and Ryan Moore booked so needs considering.
Forget It @ 20.00 e/w - Late headway when 25-1 sixth of 15 in what looked ordinary C&D maiden for track last October; likely capable of better, probably over further.
2.15 Zaham @ 8.2 - Made huge progress in first season last year, winding up with seconds in Group 3 events at Goodwood and Ascot; those efforts earned him just the highest BHA rating of these but ran no sort of race in Winter Derby on return (had been gelded, stumbled at start and suffered an overreach) and needs to put that effort well behind on slowest ground he will have tackled.
Gower Song @ 19.00 e/w - On sidelines for much of last season but taken form to new level in Dubai this time, delivered just right when winning Group 3 last month and far from disgraced in Sheema Classic latest (tried to come from last and was hampered); handles soft and has to be respected as mare at top of her game.

2.00 Marygate @ 20.00 e/w
7-2, run out of second place only close home in what appeared a substandard Doncaster maiden last weekend (second well held since though might have found race coming too soon); entitled to come on for the run and place prospects at least again.
Racing Post
2.30 Marning Star @ 23.00 e/w Cathedral Walk @ 24.00 e/w
Marning Star: Didn´t win but bits of fair form for Mick Channon last year, including over 7f on easy ground here on second start and when third in valuable nursery at Newcastle in August; best watched to see which way he goes in market on first run for new yard on reappearance.
Cathedral Walk: Ability on turf on debut and on Polytrack on last couple of starts; return to 1m will help and handles cut but handicapper hasn´t taken many chances; minor place claims back on grass.

Odds available with Betfair at time of writing
2.20 Quarry Town @ 10.00 e/w Tank Top @ 13.00 e/w
Quarry Town: Dual novice hurdle winner for Henrietta Knight who turned in best effort on latest start (second run in handicap) when fourth to Pocket Aces at Kempton; since switched to David Pipe and well worth a try over this trip; interesting runner in open event.
Tank Top: From stable going well in recent weeks and this one has improved steadily with each outing; well worth a try over this trip and, although more needed for handicap debut, no surprise to see him go well in open event.
Racing Post
2.50 Something Silver @ 7.2
Won over extended 2m5f over hurdles at this course and run to a similar level over fences this term; should be suited by step back up in trip but has had a couple of very hard races of late and tougher task from this 5lb higher mark.

Friday, 18 April 2008 09:16 |
Odds available with Betfair at time of writing
1.10 Dabbers Chief @ 6.8
US-bred who is half-brother to four winning sprinters on dirt and made 120,000euros last year; stable running into form and a likely contender, particularly if the betting offers encouragement.
Racing Post
1.40 Miracle Seeker @ 4.8 Dunedin Star @ 9.00 e/w
Miracle Seeker: Half-sister to Champion Hurdler Katchit who looks sure to win races over middle distances this year (entered in Oaks and Irish Oaks) judged on what she showed when placed in maidens at Haydock (on soft) and at Doncaster last autumn; yard not been as quick out of the blocks as some.
Dunedin Star: Out of an Oaks third who later went on to show very smart form in the US; market should be revealing on debut for yard that has hit form this week.
Racing Post
2.10 Choose Your Moment @ 11.00 Huzzah @ 42.00 e/w
Choose Your Moment: Progressed well in his three starts last year, suited by step up to this trip when impressive in York nursery on final start; looks type to train on, has a 2,000 Guineas entry and Ryan Moore interesting booking so has to enter calculations.
Huzzah: Took seven starts to get off mark last year but improved for switch to forcing tactics, wide-margin scorer at Salisbury and creditable efforts in pair of nurseries afterwards; got 14lb pull with Kal Barg on Doncaster form but may not have potential of that rival.
Racing Post
2.40 Oldjoesaid @ 4.1 Hogmaneigh @ 9.60 e/w
Oldjoesaid: Progressive type who can go well fresh, defeat on 2007 reappearance more down to 6f trip than needing the run; shade disappointing he couldn´t win final start last year but still on the upgrade and handles the ground so plenty to offer for yard which haswon this twice in recent years.
Hogmaneigh: Had quiet end to 2007 in higher class races but resumes on fair mark and often looks at his best fresh; likes cut underfoot and dangerous to underestimate.
Racing Post
3.15 Bouguereau @ 2.64
Being targeted at the Italian Derby (also has Dante and Derby entries) and had no trouble in landing the odds in ordinary Pontefract maiden on soft surface over this trip on return last month after promising juvenile career; that gives him race fitness advantage over most of these and has to be respected.
Racing Post
3.50 Changing Skies @ 3.25 Certain Promise @ 7.00
Changing Skies: Top-class pedigree, sister to Lancashire Oaks winner Playful Act and Yorskhire Cup winner Percussionist; promising debut when third in 1m maiden here last October and this surely a race the Sangster family will be keen to win so looks sure to be major contender.
Certain Promise: Sister to Ribblesdale winner Spanish Sun so should be suited by this trip and can be expected to leave debut form in 7f Newmarket fillies maiden (second favourite but needed experience) well behind in due course for yard that won this in 2002 and 2003.
Racing Post
4.25 Badweia @ 5.6
Half-sister to useful sprinter Wid out of Group-placed daughter of 1,000 Guineas winner Shadayid; plenty from family ready to strike first time and has to be high on list.
Racing Post
4.55 Nemo Spirit @ 14.00 e/w In Close @ 14.00 e/w
Nemo Spirit: Yard started the season well and ran well when placed in maidens on soft surface last autumn at Salisbury (ahead of Manyriverstocross) and here (Ballisodare behind); should be suited by this trip and be thereabouts again.
In Close: $340,000 son of Belmont hero and US 8.5f Grade 3 turf winner who is half-sister to top-class US turf performer Riskaverse; market should be revealing on debut.

All odds currently available with Betfair at time of writing
2.10 Dougie Peel @ 7.8
Dam related to winners at 7f-1m4f but there is plenty of speed in the pedigree; stable has fair strike-rate with juvenile newcomers and market should guide.
Racing Post
2.45 Rubirosa @ 8.80 Baldemar @ 16.00 e/w
Rubirosa: C&D winner on debut last year and unfortunate not to win over this trip in soft ground at Ayr on penultimate start; disappointed on final run but yard started the season in good heart and very interesting from high draw.
Baldemar: C&D winner last August who was far from disgraced over 5f on last two starts, leaving impression that return to this trip would suit; gelded since final start and handles cut; one to keep an eye on for reappearance from stall 18.
Racing Post
3.20 Ronaldsay @ 4.8
Campaigned exclusively in fillies races but steadily progressive last year and returned to winning ways in soft penultimate start; best effort in Listed event in October and, although not seen since, yard in tremendous form so lack of recent run no problem; should go well.
Racing Post
3.55 Albaqaa @ 4.6 Cobo Bay @ 15.00 e/w
Albaqaa: Had a few chances last year but off the mark on first run for Richard Fahey in uncompetitive maiden on reappearance; runner-up, who finished well clear of rest, has since beaten 72-rated rival (reliable yardstick) in comfortable fashion so well worth a second look from 78 mark.
Cobo Bay:Progressed well last year and best effort over this trip on easy ground at Ayr in September; reportedly done well physically over the winter and interesting with conditions to suit on reappearance.
Racing Post
4.30 Al Wasef @ 4.20
$240,000 half-brother to dirt sprint winner in US and out of dam who also won on dirt (sprint); in-form yard more than capable of readying a newcomer and interesting on debut in uncompetitive event.
Racing Post
5.05 Tajneed @ 5.00 Yorkshire Blue @ 38.00 e/w
Tajneed: Useful for Dermot Weld and, despite form tailing off in second half of last year, showed he retains plenty of ability at Doncaster after break last week; may be better than bare form as he fared best of the prominent racers and of interest in this less competitive race.
Yorkshire Blue: Has never been at best on reappearance in previous years and is an inconsistent performer whose style of racing means he needs things to drop right; Paul Hanagan rides and yard among winners but may be best watched this time.

5.40 Paddywack @ 18 e/w Brut @ 15.00 e/w
Paddywack: Tough sprinter who took this race last year (didn´t go into it in the best of form) and well beaten on first start after short break at Pontefract; on same mark as for last win so not one to rule out in ordinary event. Brut: Had a good time of it last year with five wins (four at favoured Hamilton) over sprint distances; however, soundly beaten both starts this year and more needed before he is worth a bet again.

All odds currently available with Betfair at time of writing2.20 Chantaco @ 3.65
Won five times on the Flat (including a Zetland Gold Cup off 91); scrambled home on hurdling debut at Taunton but then looked a lot sharper at Wincanton, when beating previous winners with some authority; certainly won´t mind this better ground and big chance.

2.55 Nation State @ 9.8 e/w Sarin @ 10.5 e/w
Nation State: Decent handicap hurdler yet to entirely convince over fences, though has come down the weights and latest Newbury effort in the reapplied blinkers was better as he had a chance until stamina ebbed away over an extended 2m6f on deep ground; could go well.
Sarin: Dug deep to win after a break on only third chase start at Exeter in November and, although up 9lb, the other two involved in the finish have gone on to better things; could still be on a decent mark and forget Haydock last time as a dreadful error endedall hope.

3.30 Amber Brook @ 11.50 e/w Blaeberry @ 11.50 e/w
Amber Brook: Stays further and been rather onepaced back at this sort of trip the last twice but stiff finish will help and could be worth another chance on this better ground; still enough to prove.
Blaeberry: Well placed by trainer and continued to improve over hurdles and fences, though found wanting off slightly lower in an Aintree handicap chase recently; could probably have done without recent rain but still worth another chance with Timmy Murphy (1-1 on her) taking over from conditional.

4.05 Theatre Dance @ 5.10 Rimsky @ 14.5 e/w
Theatre Dance:Done well for this yard and handled transition to stamina test really well at Newbury recently though ran up against another progressive type; looks on a fair mark and go well again.
Rimsky: Out-and-out stayer in the mud but not obviously well treated back over hurdles after failing to get to grips with the principals in a Newbury handicap chase last month.

4.40 Lou Du Moulin Mas @ 4.40 Beauchamp Oracle @ 65.00 e/w
Lou Du Moulin Mas: Quite a smart handicap chaser at his best and class saw him home in hunter chase assignments at Folkestone and Fontwell, hammering Take The Stand on the second occasion; however, came up well short here last month when jumping left something to be desired; capable of better, admittedly.
Beauchamp Oracle: Fair hunter chaser on a sound surface and twice a course winner, but below his best this campaign and plenty to find with some of today´s rivals.

5.15 Gold Reef @ 5.9 Dusty Springheeled @ 16.5 e/w
Gold Reef: Pleasing winning debut on Boxing Day and had Flowing On behind when second to a smart newcomer at Fakenham; surpassed those efforts when fourth in a Listed event at Sandown and stamina she showed that day should stand her in good stead round here; one offour Alan King runners.
Dusty Springheeled: From same family as good chaser Heltornic; fair to assume she didn´t go on the heavy when a beaten favourite last time but had previously run well on debut at Newbury and that form isn´t bad (fourth a winner since); wouldn´t be a surprise to see her in the mix.
